Set Extension: 3D Architectural Expansion - Três Graças
Role: Digital Matte Painter | Client: Rede Globo
The Goal
For the series premiere, the practical set needed a more imposing, vertical presence to establish the urban density of the neighborhood. My goal was to extend the green building on the corner by adding multiple new floors, making the environment feel more developed and scaled-up for the opening episode.
The Workflow
The core of this shot involved integrating a 3D render of the additional building levels into the original plate. Working in Photoshop, I meticulously blended the 3D assets with the practical green building, focusing on texture matching and material consistency. By delivering high-resolution, layered assets, I ensured the compositing team could seamlessly seat the new architecture behind the foreground tree and power lines, maintaining the integrity of the original photography.
The Real Challenges
3D to Plate Integration: The biggest technical hurdle was making a clean 3D render feel like physical concrete and paint. I had to manually add weathering, subtle color shifts, and imperfections to the 3D floors so they shared the exact same "DNA" as the practical building below.
Lighting and Material Match: Since this was a daylight exterior, the specular highlights and shadow depths on the new floors had to perfectly mirror the practical building. I spent a lot of time matching the soft daylight falloff to ensure the 3D extension didn't feel detached or "too clean" compared to the set.
Managing Foreground Occlusion: The new floors sit behind a complex foreground tree and various urban elements. I focused on providing the precision needed for a clean handoff to the comp team, ensuring the edges of the new architecture held up on camera.
