Professional Cleanup & Set Extension Demonstration
Role: Digital Matte Painter | Course Assignment (MattePaint.com Week 4)
The Goal
The objective of this project was twofold: first, to perform a high-precision cleanup of a complex urban plate by removing all moving vehicles and distractions, and second, to execute a seamless set extension. The aim was to expand the existing skyline by integrating new architectural elements into the background, creating a more dense and visually compelling environment while maintaining the original plate's lighting and perspective.
The Workflow
My process begins with a meticulous plate analysis to determine the best tracking strategy—whether it’s a standard 2D track, a planar track in Mocha, or a full 3D camera solve in Nuke for complex parallax. I utilize stabilized patches and frame-by-frame painting in Photoshop for texture-heavy areas, which are then re-projected onto 3D geometry. The final step always involves a surgical re-graining process to ensure the "invisible" work matches the original film stock or sensor noise perfectly.
The Real Challenges
Plate Cleanup (Photoshop): Removing dynamic elements and traffic to create a high-resolution, static clean plate of the street and immediate architecture.
Environment Extension: Designing and painting additional buildings to extend the background. This involved matching the architectural style, perspective, and lighting of the original city layout.
Tools Used
Adobe Photoshop
Production Note: A comprehensive demonstration of technical cleanup combined with creative set extension, showcasing the ability to both subtract and add elements to a live-action shot seamlessly.
