Digital Cleanup & Restoration - Garota do Momento (Ep. 202)
Role: Digital Matte Painter | Client: Rede Globo
The Goal
For this period-drama sequence, the practical locations required extensive digital restoration to maintain the 1950s aesthetic. My goal was twofold: to perform a technical restoration of a building by removing environmental "black stains" and to modernize the cityscape into a period-accurate environment by removing antennas and changing building signage.
The Workflow
Working in Photoshop, I approached the restoration shot by "harvesting" clean architectural textures from the same building to patch over the black stains and environmental wear. For the second shot, I carefully isolated and removed modern antennas from the rooftops and used custom-painted typography and textures to replace building names, ensuring the new signage shared the same perspective and lighting as the original plate. I delivered these assets as high-fidelity 16-bit TIF files to ensure the final composite held up to the high-resolution standards of the production.
The Real Challenges
Texture Restoration: Removing heavy black stains from a building requires more than just a simple "clone stamp." I had to meticulously reconstruct the underlying stone and paint textures, ensuring that the natural variations in the material were preserved so the building didn't look unnaturally "flat."
Period-Specific Accuracy: Removing modern elements like antennas is a critical step for historical immersion. I had to ensure the rooftops were reconstructed to look physically complete and that the new building names were integrated with the correct period-appropriate font weight and weathering.
Invisible Integration: The challenge was making these heavy cleanup tasks completely invisible to the viewer. By delivering 16-bit files, I provided the compositing team with the necessary data to apply grain and color passes that seamlessly unified my paintings with the original film-look of the series.
