Set Extension: Lake & Vegetation - Êta Mundo Melhor (Ep. 27)
Role: Digital Matte Painter | Client: Rede Globo
The Goal
The original plate was a relatively simple forest clearing with a large rock formation, but the narrative required a more scenic, high-stakes location. My goal was to "complete the world" by adding a lake at the base of the rocks, transforming a dry environment into a vibrant riverside scene.
The Workflow
I painted the entire river and waterfall system in Photoshop, meticulously building the textures for the moving water and the mist where it meets the rocks. I focused on creating a seamless blend between the practical rock face and the digital water. To ensure the final image held up under professional scrutiny, I delivered the assets as a high-fidelity 16-bit TIF, allowing for smooth color transitions in the sky and water.
The Real Challenges
Water-to-Rock Integration: The primary challenge was the interaction between the digital water and the practical rocks. I had to manually paint the "churn" and contact points where the water met the stone to ensure it didn't look like a separate layer, but rather a river that was physically eroding and reflecting the environment.
Maintaining Technical Fidelity: Because the final grading was to be done after my delivery, I had to be extremely careful with my 16-bit values. I focused on keeping the highlights in the waterfall and the shadows in the river depths within a range that allowed the colorists full flexibility without losing any detail.
Invisible Clean Integration: I delivered the assets with precise edges to ensure the new river sat naturally behind the foreground elements of the plate. My focus was on the "invisible" side of the craft—making sure the perspective of the flowing water perfectly matched the camera's angle on the set.
