Set Extension: Êta Mundo Melhor (Ep. 101)

Role: Digital Matte Painter | Client: Rede Globo

The Goal:

The production for this scene used a practical porch set backed by a chroma key screen. My goal was to extend that environment, replacing the green screen with a photorealistic 1940s rural landscape featuring a river and expanded terrain that felt completely integrated with the physical set.

The Workflow

Working in Photoshop, I built the background by extending the terrain and the river. Because I was working over a chroma key plate, I had to ensure the perspective of the new environment perfectly matched the camera's angle on the porch. I delivered high-resolution layered assets to the compositing team to ensure a clean, seamless integration with the plate.

The Real Challenges:

  • Chroma Key Integration: Since there was no original background to reference, I had to design the lighting of the matte painting to match the soft, natural light hitting the actors on the practical set.

  • Painting Natural Elements: Recreating the river was a core challenge. I focused on the water's surface reflections and ripples to ensure it looked like a living environment rather than a static painting.

  • Maintaining Perspective: I manually aligned the vanishing points for the riverbanks and distant hills to ground the extension, ensuring the scale felt physically correct relative to the foreground actors.

Tools Used:

  • Adobe Photoshop

Production Note: This work was delivered as high-resolution layered assets to support a seamless integration within the VFX pipeline.
